JUST LIKE MAGNETS
Electrons are negative, when matter loses electrons it becomes positive because of the lack of negative particles known as electrons. The process of removing electrons is known as polarization. With that in mind, if an object is being polarized then it lost one to all of the objects electrons. As a result of such events of polarization will leave matter lacking electrons and leaving matter only with neutrons and protons which are neutral and positive. On the other hand, if matter is gaining electrons, through the process of ionization, then it becomes negative because it is gaining outside electrons. Triboelectric effect are a sequence of materials that are best known for loosing electrons then gaining electrons. There for, negative objects will repel other negative objects like magnets. The same thing goes with positive, electron lacking matter. However, if a negative substance is placed on a neutral object then it will make it positive and thus attracting one another like magnets.
Charging matter
The image on the right shows Bob Pflugfelder; a scientist and host of Bob Science, generating electricity from a PVC Pipe which is made from long organic chains known as polymers. Hair, like Fur, is part of triboelectric series of matter;- materials that give off electrons. When the PVC Pipe is rubbed agents the scientist's hair, electron's from the hair are polarized (Stolen) and in doing so making the pipe negative and hair positive. So far, electrons from the hair are stolen by the polymer in the PVC Pile. This made the hair positive since there are no electrons and the pipe negative because it has electrons from the hair.
WHat are Triboelectric series
Triboelectric series are material that when rubbed against other materials electricity is produced. A best notable example is when a person walks on a rug with socks and then touches the nearest person. That Person will feel a sudden shock and that is because electrons from the fur; known to be a triboelectric, will be stolen and then moved on to the human who is touching another individual. Fun fact, water does not conduct electricity; the ions in the solution like table salt will conduct electrons.
How does magnetism and charging a carpet have to do with conductivity?
Well, we know from magnetism that everything has a charge;-right? Well, what will happen if a mylar was to touch a negatively charged PVC pipe? To begin with, mylar is a synthetic material that contains polyester resin, which is just a long organic chain of molecules. If one was to connect a negatively charged PVC pipe from rubbing hair, fur, or even a dry towel;- and place it under the mylar, what will happen? The conclusion is quite fascinating, something that will change the way one used to think about gravity and also conductivity.
What did i just see?
Good question amigo! Well, as we discussed about magnets;- everything has a charge. When Bob Pflugfelder rubbed his hair with the PVC pipe it produced a movement of electrons from the hair to the PVC pipe. The process of making the pipe negative led to Bob Pflugfelder's hair being positively charged. Now, the Mylar itself is positive since it didn't touch the PVC pipe, however when the Mylar did touched the pipe it picked up electrons from the pipe and thus it made the Mylar negative. The reason why the Mylar repealed from the pipe is because negative objects repel negative objects. That fundamental also explains why the Mylar took a ball appearance and it is because all strands from the Mylar are repealing each other.
